Anjaali Shah delighted guests with her performance of classical Indian Kathak dances at the fundraiser.
More than 150 people gathered in Nyon, Switzerland for Friends of India’s “Flavour of India” event which grossed approximately 17,000 Swiss Francs to help complete FOI’s most recent project – the Tirunelveli Residential Learning Centre in Tamil Nadu which will serve the needs of orphaned children affected by HIV.
At the event, FOI founder and President, Pam Walsh OBE, expressed deep gratitude to all who gathered to support the initiative, the foundation stone for which was laid in February 20ll.
Many present at the event were longtime sponsors who continue to generously help fund Friends of India’s mission to serve the needs of disadvantaged women and children in poor areas of Tamil Nadu.
Brother Victordass, who had especially flown in from India for the event, represented FOI’s Indian partner for this project, Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Victordass explained the Centre’s significance, noting that the Centre — now already operating — “assists orphans affected by HIV who experience social stigma, isolation and discrimination, and a lack of access to basic education and health care.”
As well as helping HIV affected children join the broader community, the Centre provides children with a safe home and necessary access to treatment and care. Children at the home have access to formal education and young adults benefit from an on-site vocational training and an income generation program.Kathak dancer, Anjaali Shah who resides in Switzerland delighted supporters with several exquisitely performed Indian classical dances at the event. Guests were also treated to an Indian multi-dish meal, a sari modeling show and a boutique filled with Indian handicrafts, jewelry and shawls. The evening culminated with a raffle and auction, which contributed to half of the funds raised.
There were many event sponsors, however, major supporters included Etihad Airways, Assurance Patrimone et Gestion, Crowne Plaza Hotel, Darwin Airlines, Antipodes Fashion Coppet, and Pernod Ricard.
