Supporting education and opportunity at the grass roots

Programmes

Despite India’s rapid growth, many Indians are trapped in poverty with little access to education or opportunity. While many have gained access to basic education, only 65% of Indians are literate, drop-out rates are high and links to jobs remain a challenge.

Our Programmes

We work closely with local partners in impoverished communities in the state of Tamil Nadu. We fight poverty and create opportunities for children and women by supporting basic education for underserved children and investing in vocational training, life-skills development and income generation for women.

Basic Education

We support access to basic education for children where severe problems with access and/or quality exist. We improve school infrastructure by installing classrooms and sanitation facilities. We work to improve educational quality and student retention through teacher training, the provision of educational materials and in-school snacks.

Vocational Training

We help develop employable skills for women and youth. In poor communities we put in place the “hardware” and “software” required for training by building classrooms, installing equipment, training trainers and funding courses.

Income Generation Support

Working with womens’ self-help groups and through community training centres we seek to empower women and youth by helping them link to microfinance, income generation and employment opportunities.
